Chen was tried on August 24, 2006, and sentenced to four years and three months for “intentional destruction of property” and “gathering people to disturb traffic order.” Chen, who is blind, has reportedly been severely beaten in jail and has gone on a hunger strike to protest the beatings.
FLASHBACK: In early 2001 I was actively promoting the then upcoming 38th Annual National UFO Conference that I was Hosting and Organizing for a 3 day / 3 night ParaUfological Extravaganza here in Austin at the Original Alamo Drafthouse cinema. It was “The Best UFO Conference nEver!” … it was canceled due to the terrible events of September 11th.

The following article appeared in the 12th issue of Austin Daze - a very Austin publication that has thrived ever since. I don’t recall the author’s name, the article credits him only as “D”… but we met in his East Austin abode and discussed all manner of strange subject matter. His excellent stream of consciousness, gonzo-style approach to his writing was mirrored in the funkiness and fun of our actual meeting. I wonder what he’s been up to since …

So now, presented here for archival purposes, is the text, cover and a PDF of the Austin Daze issue featuring pre-NUFOC event coverage.

- SMiles Lewis

Austin Daze Volume #2, Issue #12 - September 2001 - pdf

It was late and I was anxious to get home. The day had been rough, and I was looking forward to a hot dinner, a cold brew, a lukewarm shower… and maybe, if I played my cards right, a clandestine midnight romp, a hairdresser with blue eyes and sturdy hips and a taste for decadence. I goose the truck along and curse the length of the road and bop to ‘jamming oldies’, whatever that is.

The Toyota stalls out and rolls to a stop smack dab in the middle of a railroad crossing. Wonderful. Dinner and suds and cleanliness are suddenly a long shot, and the odds on snatch are totally off the board at this point. Then the lightshow commences and the bells start clanging and big pieces of wood with orange stripes begin to descend towards my ride.

Brandon’s office was conceived on December 20, 1991 by the “Task Force on Greater CIA Openness” in a study undertaken at the request of then CIA director Robert Gates, a Bush, Sr. appointee, and immediately classified, though a few copies were leaked. The report proposed an image upgrade to neutralize public hostility. The task force was in “substantial agreement that we generally need to make the institution and the process more visible and understandable rather than strive for openness on specific substantive issues.” Forget openness, the Openness Task Force advised. The report “seems to recommend no real change in attitude,” complained The Excluded Middle, an anti-CIA Internet site, “only in the way that the agency presents itself to a hostile or at least an indifferent public.” The authors of the report boast arrogantly that the CIA’s Public Affairs Office (PAO) censored and had buried projects that it found objectionable in the past. Chase Brandon hails from the PAO. Contact with “every major wire service, newspaper, news weekly, and television network in the nation” was advised by the panel. The result was the Entertainment Liaison Office.
Flashback: Guide to Para Texas

In late 2001, in the wake of September 11th, a new publication was born out of fear for our Republic and a need to communicate the weirdness of post-911 life to our Central Texas friends, family and neighbors.

From early 2002 to mid 2003 I was editor of the Austin Para Times news-zine. We covered a variety of paranormal and parapolitical issues and topics.

I left the magazine to finally start my non-profit community lending library, the Anomaly Archives.

In issue #3, I wrote an article as my alter-ego Jackson Valient (with co-writer Yogina Bare … another pseudononymous author and fellow fringe explorer) that serves as an introduction to all things anomalous here in Central Texas.

I offer it here for archival purposes and as part of my personal introduction to our new audience within the LOWFI network.

<a id="flink_100_9781790017824263020" title=" Here’s a cool tale I became aware of just a few years ago. When Missionaries first arrived in this area from New Spain (Mexico) they set about to convert the locals in the usual ways, sometimes quite heavy-handedly. The reaction to this was succinctly put by the Elders of southern Arizona tribes. ”The Lady in Blue has already told us about this Jesus, and she is why we have sought you out to know him better, and be baptized, as she instructed. It does not seem to us that their ways are yours. You beat us to believe, when we already do. Lighten up.”.They did, and continued East, only after establishing missions along their route.Kino and company were clueless about “La Dama De Azul” until they reached the New Mexico/Texas region, where virtually every tribe they met told of the Blue Lady and her appearances to them, preaching and healing, always disappearing into the air when done with the task at hand, but returning frequently.Farther to the East, around 1639, fifty members of the Jumano Indian tribe came to Mission Corpus Christi de la Isleta south of El Paso and asked for instructions in the Catholic faith. When the astonished padres asked the Indians what motivated them to come to Isleta, they said their people living in East Texas had been visited by a beautiful lady who always wore a blue habit and taught them religion in their own language. The lady in blue, they said, urged them to search out missionaries to hear the word of God and be baptized. At the time, Isleta and another mission, Nuestra Senora de Socorro, were originally in Mexico, but a change in the course of the Rio Grande River placed them on Texas soil.Through his work, Father Alfonso de Benavides learned that Mother Maria de Jesus de Agreda, a cloistered abbess who lived in Spain, was the lady in blue. A Catholic nun of Jewish descent, Sor María de Jesus of Agreda authored Mystical City of God, an 8-book narrative of her direct revelations from Mary, mother of Jesus. Commanded to burn her writings because “surely God would not chose a woman for such an important work,” María, a controversial 48-year old cloistered abbess, was seized in 1650 from her sick bed and carried to the feet of a Spanish Inquisitor. Although ultimately acquitted, the interrogation covered her mystical experiences and missionary work in the American Southwest, events corroborated by witnesses in Spain and as far as Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, where she is honored yet today as the legendary missionary known as the Lady in Blue.Often consulted by King Phillip IV, Mother Maria said she visited the new world in a manner known as bi-location, a phenomena that allows one individual to appear personally in two places at the same time. Maria de Agreda had always wished to come to the New World as a missionary, but her vows in Spain prevented her. While praying for the welfare of the Indians, she often fell into a trance and was taken by God, without her awareness, to a different place where Indians lived. She said she saw the Indians, heard them speak and felt the difference in the climate of the land. All told there were more than five hundred visits by her to the Native Americans of over thirty tribes. After a life of service, both mundane and sublime, she passed away in Agreda, Spain, never having corporally visited the New World. The last reported appearance of the lady in blue was in the 1840s when a mysterious young woman wearing a long blue dress came into the homes of families stricken by a “black tongue” epidemic at old Sabinetown on the Sabine River. She remained in the community for days, brewing a tea from forest herbs, tending to the ill, weeping over the dead, and never sleeping. When the epidemic ran its course, she disappeared as mysteriously as she appeared.Although it is uncommon, bilocation is an ancient phenomenon. It is claimed to have been experienced, and even practiced by will, by mystics, ecstatics, saints, monks, holy persons, and magical adepts. Several Christian saints and monks were adapt at bilocation such as St. Anthony of Padua, St. Ambrose of Milan, St. Severus of Ravenna, and Padre Pio of Italy. In 1774, St. Alphonsus Maria de’Ligouri was seen at the bedside of the dying Pope Clement XIV, when in fact the saint was confined to his cell in a location that was a four-day journey away.A pioneer psychical researcher, Frederic W. H. Myers, one of the founders of the Society for Psychical Research in England, along with others collected and studied reports of bilocation, however the phenomenon has received little interest in modern times.
<a id="flink_100_13431396157828913238" title="“We are not realists. We are not idealists. We are intermediatists–that nothing is real, but that nothing is unreal.” Charles H. FortTHUNDERBIRDS (pictograph at Black Dragon Canyon, Utah)Imagine: huge birds, large enough to attack adults and carry off children… riding the arcs of storms, thunder and lightening flashing menacingly. It seems as though every Native American tribe has stories featuring these legendary creatures-and gargantuan birds haunt legends the world over.In Arabia, it is known as the Roc. In Malaysia, the Garuda. In Papua New Guinea, they are called Ropen. In China, they call them Peng. Here in the United States, the feathered menace is known as the Piasa, or Thunderbird. The archaeological record will attest to the massive winged creatures, which once thrived about our primordial world. The Pterosaurs-reptiles–lived during the Mesozoic Era (248-65 million years ago), and were the first vertebrates to evolve the power of flight. The largest had wingspans of over 40 feet!More recently, true “giant” birds, the Tetratorns, soared above the mastodons and giant sloths of North and South America. With wingspans of up to 25 feet, their fossils abound in the northwestern corner of Arizona. They are thought to have gone extinct a mere 8,000 years ago. Or did they? Arizona’s Papago, Pima, and Cochiti people have their tales of giant birds, and in the Sonora region of Mexico and the southwestern U.S. live the Yaqui people. They, too, tell of encounters with Thunderbirds. On July 25, 1977, ten-year-old Marlon Lowe, of Lawndale, Illinois, was playing in his backyard when two large birds appeared. One bird descended upon the boy and tried to carry him off, and had him airborne for a time. His mother, seeing this from the kitchen window, gave chase, screaming. The bird could barely “lift off” with the boy, and dropped him after a hundred-yard chase. Both Marlon and his mother describe a dark bird with a naked head and a wingspan of 15 to 20 feet.In 2002, in Dillingham and Manokotak, Alaska, pilots and townsfolk observed large flying creatures with 14-foot wingspans. These were described as reptilian, with membrane wings and crested heads. In May of 2008, numerous reports of Pterodactyl-like creatures with wingspans of up to 18 feet were reported in Washington County, Pennsylvania. So many of the world’s legends talk of massive birds sharing the earth with us-and indeed, American Teratorn bones have almost always been found “in conjunction with human habitation sites.”It’s just plain startling to see a massive, unknown (or unclassifiable) bird in flight. It’s downright bizarre to contemplate the idea that the progeny of an Ice Age flock could still inhabit the planet. But is it more bizarre than the steel workers who saw flying reptiles over modern-day Pennsylvania, or the “Man-Birds” being reported in the lands of the mythical Thunderbird? Are these archetypal images of our racial memory, as Carl Jung might have interpreted them? Or are these as-yet unclassified creatures, as cryptozoologists might imagine them?Or are they phenomena that Fort would ponder over and report upon, patiently awaiting the next “impossible” airborne creature?Go to binallofamerica.com/index.html for Tim’s interview with Ken Gerhard,A great discussion of all things Thunderbird, Texas Big Bird, and Cryptozoological!
<a id="flink_100_13609791199806651612" title="Between 9/30/1946 and 1/9/09, there have been 1,853 documented sightings of UFOs / UAPs in Arizona (thanks, National UFO Reporting Center!-The actual number could be closer to 6,500 as a majority of witnesses are reluctant to formally report their experiences for fear of ridicule or other unwanted attention.Understandable.Who wants to be snickered at by Barbie and Ken on the six O’Clock news?Others do not hesitate to report the anomalous… and I find them admirable.Cym at Natural Nomad http://natural-nomad.blogspot.com/ had an interesting view of the Catalinas on 1/10/09. Seems she caught an image of something anomalous lingering near Mt Lemmon Observatory. My first impression had it looking like a digital artifact. Second look in hi res had me wondering… and hooked.Visit her site for images and info on what it could NOT be.If Charles H. Fort were to hear of this he might remark:“It appeared to some to be a great Beetle clasping the ridge with legs or strangely formed pedipalps, wings in their chitinous covers. Was it simply resting a bit, on its way back to the aether? Or was it FEEDING?”.‘Till next time, friends.
LOWFI seeks Nixon’s spirit… are you up for a trip?

Fortean societies have existed before, but…

That’s right, when L.A. falls in the fucking ocean and is flushed away, all it will leave is Arizona Bay….” - Bill HicksRecently I stumbled across a map of what the U.S. will look like after the coming prophesied (by some) Earth Changes. Years ago, I had seen this same map in a north coast new age shop and smirked and snortled accordingly, but whatever the reason may be, it certainly can’t be denied that some sort of global climate change is currently underway, whether caused by HAARP, Al Gore’s Global Warming agenda, or just a cyclic pattern that occurs time and again over the course Mother Earth’s many rotations. The map in question (above) was produced by psychic channeler Lori Toye in 1983, and doesn’t bode well for the current structure of LOWFI. Most of California and the Pacific Northwest will be submerged in the resultant deluge, a future Atlantis in the Atlantic. Skylaire will either have to join me on the island of central California, or take refuge in sunny San Diego. Regan Lee in Oregon appears sunk, and the fate of Mothman experiencer Andy Colvin in Washington State doesn’t appear much drier. Jarret Keene in Nevada is appropriately buried in the watery ruins no doubt on account for the wicked and wanton ways exhibited by a sinful state that allows such vagaries as gambling and prostitution. (God can be pissy this way!) Looks like Thomas Cosgrove is Arizona will have beach front property, no doubt driving up the value of his home and making it a prime tourist destination ala Bill Hick’s Arizona Bay. Everybody else looks high and dry for the time being…that is, until the aliens come and snatch them up!Learn more about Lori Toye’s ascended master channelings here. And because I had seen UFO’s that then meant I believed in ET’s. Of course, I believe that there are things in the sky that we cannot conclusively identify. That’s where the “U” in UFO’s comes from! Not to beat a dead horse, but I think it’s important that when we talk about UFO’s, we are alluding to things witnessed in the skies that we cannot positively identify, and that appear to be out of the ordinary. And, of course, I get my panties all into a bunch when people pretend to know, or delude themselves into “believing” – pro or con, one way or the other — be they skeptics or true believers. To make up your mind is to close your mind. Skeptics and true believers, alike. They are really one and the same, in a sense. Once you close your mind to other possibilities, you are closing your mind to ALL POSSIBILITIES.Whatever the case, Forteans tend to lean toward the proposition that UFO’s are not actual physical nut and bolt craft, but are, in essence, some type of phenomena perhaps partially conjured in our little ‘ol brains or collective consciousness ala Carl Jung. This is a hypothesis explored in a lecture I’ve delivered upon occasion entitled “Were The Early UFO Contactees Ritual Magicians?” which presents the theory that the early contactees, as well as current day abductees, have used magic rituals to contact UFO’s.In this lecture, I posit that — when under the influence of certain psychoactive substances — one can sometimes look into what Fortean researcher John Keel has called the Superspectrum: a realm, or alternate dimension that is all around us, although hidden from everyday, or normal modes, of perception. And, furthermore, that this Superspectrum is what those who have dabbled in the magical traditions have gained access to. What this suggests — to your humble reporter — is that, in order to observe UFO’s, one must often enter into a more receptive state, like a psychic or channeler tuning into voices or subtle energies. Psychedelic drugs are just perhaps one avenue of tapping into this Superspectrum, as well as other methods, including sensory deprivation, sex magic rituals, hypnosis and chanting. For instance, psychic channelers must first induce in themselves a trance state before being able to invoke spirits, so maybe it’s the same thing going on with UFOs, in some instances. Whatever the case, I’m certainly not encouraging people to experiment with mind expanding drugs, although some have found this approach to be productive. Different maps, for different chaps, as they say.The Superspectrum theory contends that UFO’s exist at frequencies beyond visible light, but that they can adjust their frequency and descend into the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum — just as you can turn the dial of your radio up and down the scale of radio frequencies. UFO’s, Mr. Keel suggests, are energies of a different frequency. Like tuning a radio, you pick up and amplify only the signal coming in at a certain point, or frequency, of the EM spectrum. Our eyes are also receivers tuned to specific wavelengths, as the brain is also a receiver. So, in the same manner, one can presumably alter their consciousness to lift the veil of consensus reality that seemingly shrouds our third eye. Likewise such things as infrared photography can be used to peer into these realms. Following this line of reasoning, it could then be conjectured that infrared technology would also enable us to perceive things what the naked eye normally cannot. This approach was explored most exhaustively by UFO researcher Trevor James Constable, who spent many years filming strange spectral creatures (ala UFOs) using infrared photography. These he often described as “critters”; strange undulating amoeba like shapshifters; some sort of chaotic energy unleashed, as opposed to what many typically think UFO’s to be: actual alien craft of a fixed size and substance.More recently — and in a similar vein to Trevor James Constable — a Northern Californian, Ed Grimsley, has witnessed a war going on, or so he perceives, between opposing UFOnauts in our skies. Through the use of state-of-the-art infrared goggles, Grimsley has apparently filmed these spectral battles on numerous occasions, which is documented in a film that can be purchased at his website. http://edgrimsley.com/At the 60th Roswell Festival in 2006, I met a fellow named Jeremy Ray, formerly of Sacramento MUFON, who regaled me with tales of how he had captured numerous UFO’s with his trusty video camera. Further, Jeremy claimed, anyone could do it, as well, if they trained a video cam to the skies on a continual basis.(Above) Jeremy Ray at RoswellLast fall, I bumped briefly into Jeremy again at the Las Vegas Crash Retrieval Conference, and asked him how it was going with the UFO video taping thing. Currently, Jeremy has changed his position somewhat and now believes that the UFOs he filmed were actually appearing specifically for him, which is akin to “calling them down” or a magic ritual, of sorts; that somehow Jeremy was attracting these things. Jeremy also alluded that certain individuals had either confiscated many of his video recordings, or that these vid recordings had some how disappeared or been removed from his computer — if I remember correctly our conversation. This brings up the spectre of those mystical men in black who are apparently suppressing the shocking truth of UFO’s haunting our skies! But that’s another story for another day…So there seems to be, at least in my way of thinking, some sort of borderland area where the use of photographic and video equipment (infrared or whatever) — in conjunction with someone intently looking for something — will eventually find something. This, in essence, is the theory presented in my aforementioned lecture: that we are perhaps interacting with some sort of non-human intelligence, or ultra dimensional entities, and that we — as the experiencers — are actually part of the experience; that we help bring it into being, whether consciously intending to, or not. " href="http://forteanswest.com/wordpress-mu/norcallowfi/2009/02/08/strange-craft-in-the-norcal-skies-and-other-ruminations/" target="_blank">Strange Craft

The Weeping Virgin of Las Vegas

<a id="flink_104_7401266372486167775" title="The Oregon coast, and in particular the Lincoln county area (Waldport, Yachats,Newport, Toledo,) has its share of UFO events. The Reeves case in the 1960s is a classic; complete with strange multi-colored lights, three very odd high strangeness furry entities walking across a field, UFOs, . . . and I’ve been wondering off and on through the years if a lot of these sightings, including the Reeves case (where UFOs were seen all over the area, not just at their home on Pioneer Mountain just outside of Newport near Toledo) weren’t due to military/naval projects. Naveed at Naveed’s Realm had an interesting post recently about hidden bases in Oregon, including the Oregon coast:Hidden Bases in My Locale…Oregon! In today’s paper I read the following:Lawmakers voice concerns about expanded Navy training along coast Oregon’s congressional delegates say the fishing fleet’s safety is among the issues that need more time for public input, by Wintston Ross.FLORENCE — Submarines can sink fishing boats, hooking into the nets of midwater trawl boats and rolling the vessels like an alligator in a swamp. Lincoln County Commissioner Terry Thompson said he knows of at least eight boats downed by subs off the West Coast in the decades he’s been a fisherman. He has lost five friends in such incidents, he said.“One boat hooked into a submarine and got dragged sideways, at 6 knots,” Thompson said. “The crew was sitting at the back deck and the captain was at the wheelhouse. Only one crewman lived to tell the story.”So when Thompson found out recently that the Navy was planning on expanding the training it does in a 126,000-square-mile swath of the Pacific Ocean between Washington and California, he wanted to make sure the military has Oregon’s fishing fleet in mind. The navy was very quiet about their plans, taking area residents by surprise and not giving much time for citizens to speak their minds about such plans. Among other things, whales are in danger from the Navy’s exercises. And it seems the navy’s been around in that area for some time:Many people may not know the Navy trains out there in the first place, even though it’s been going on since the early 1900s and includes exploding bombs underwater, firing missiles and 5-inch naval guns, and doing high-intensity sonar testing.Naveed found that one underground base in the Lincoln County area;here we go, the first base in Oregon that I found is located around the Lincoln City area (on the gorgeous Oregon Coast) in the Van Duzer Corridor. There people have seen everything from weird lights to army bases somewhere in the woods. One couple apparently even had some missing time out in that area, which tends to be a good sign of alien abduction. It’s quite possible some of the UFO and anomalous related events were, and are, due to naval and other military actions on the coast.
High Strangeness Bigfoot: The Ghost in Conser Lake

<a id="flink_106_12490647788946609561" title="In late 2001, in the wake of September 11th, a new publication was born out of fear for our Republic and a need to communicate the weirdness of post-911 life to our Central Texas friends, family and neighbors. From early 2002 to mid 2003 I was editor of the Austin Para Times news-zine. We covered a variety of paranormal and parapolitical issues and topics.I left the magazine to finally start my non-profit community lending library, the Anomaly Archives. In issue #3, I wrote an article as my alter-ego Jackson Valient (with co-writer Yogina Bare … another pseudononymous author and fellow fringe explorer) that serves as an introduction to all things anomalous here in Central Texas.I offer it here for archival purposes and as part of my personal introduction to our new audience within the LOWFI network.- SMilesAusTex Anomalous: An APT Guide to Para TexasBy Jackson Valient and Yogini Bare PDF Downloads: apt3-pg6 / apt3-pg7Why Austin Para Times? What’s so “Para” about Austin or Texas?People might not think of Texas as particularly paranormal or parapolitical, but we have a long tradition as a disputed territory and have retained the right to secede from the United States. Our state sports a lot of stereotypes about backyard barbeques, cowboy roundups, and other wholesome family fun, but Texas has also seen some of the most notorious mass killings in the country, from murders by free-range serial killers like Henry Lee Lucas & Angel Maturino Resendez the “Railway Killer” to the Matamoros massacre graves found along the Texas/Mexico border. We have one of the largest training facilities for Air Force intelligence in the country, and we’ve even had a President ceremonially sacrificed as part of a Military-Industrial Complex coup right on Dallas’ own Grassy Knoll. The Lone Star State may seem pretty straightforward at first, but, for the curious and well-informed, there’s a lot more lying beneath the fac?ade of normalcy.Texas Cryptoozoology ConnectionDeep within the heart of the East Texas Piney Woods lies the mysterious Caddo Lake region, a place of great cinematic interest which has seen the filming of many movies, including the drive-in classic The Legend of Boggy Creek about a bigfoot creature. But East Texas is also the stomping ground of real life bigfoot hunters. A network of dedicated outdoorsman and naturalists forensically investigating the physical traces of these intriguing and archetypal Sasquatch reports stretches from Conroe to Jefferson. Chester Moore, a contributor in previous APT issues, is headquartered in Conroe where he just held the annual Southern Crypto Conference last month. Meanwhile, Craig Woolheater, Assistant Director of the Texas Bigfoot Research Center in Jefferson, is busy organizing the 2nd Annual Texas Bigfoot Conference scheduled for October 12th.All across the State you can see the tell tale folktale markers in such placenames as HarryMan Road. Sombunall of these street namings actually originate from local sighting reports. Even Austin has a Cryptozoological Connection. The Fortean coincidence of names in these “alien animal” phenomena recurs with the strange goings-on reported down along Austin’s own … Boggy Creek. Residents along a certain stretch of Boggy Creek have reported mysterious shadowy shapes and animal noises. Reports one person:“I heard a strange animal call: it was positively mournful. It was almost like the hooting of our owls, but not quite. The cry had a resonance to it that was mammalian; it had expression.” And later … “This was a ‘textbook’ chimp sound, starting with the characteristic low, heaving grunt, working its way up to a shrieking “OOH-OOH-OOH-OOH- AH-AH-AH-AH!”Soon after, a resident’s dog went missing. When the dog was found barely alive, it:“… Appeared to have fallen off the bluff, and was unable to move. ‘He was ripped to shreds’, recalls Darrell, ‘The skin on the top of his head was flipped back like a bad toupee, and his skull was punctured. He was a bloody mess.’”The main witness was so frightened that he actually contacted Texas Parks and Wildlife. TPW was rather dismissive but sent out a two person team armed with rifles. The team searched the area along the creek and up on the bluff:” … they reported having found a veritable boneyard in an area up above the bluff, with skeletons ranging from dog-and-cat-size to entire deer. Their official opinion was that our ‘monster’ was a mountain lion.”As cut and dried as this case appears it offers typical Fortean and Paranormal anomalous details that are the hallmark of such ambiguous mysteries. The main witness, who was only one of the people to report these happenings, stated he was part of a consciousness group experimenting with their own version of Stanislov Grof’s Holotropic Breathwork, and quoted another para-investigator as saying:“It is inevitable that the intention to investigate and communicate any experience alters the ultimate reality of that experience.”Whether you are a Fortean, Anomalist, Paranormalist or Cryptozoologist, the subject of “Bigfoot” offers an opportunity to consider various possible paradigms. From a purely Fortean or Anomalist (informational) perspective, one can consider these reports as possible misidentification of escaped chimps as bigfoot creatures or even the reverse: the misidentification of bigfoot as an escaped chimp. The Fortean or Anomalist will focus on the report as a narrative with possible but unnecessary physical evidence. The paranormalist usually will focus on the mysterious aspects of the beasts’ sudden appearance and disappearance. They may also link the witness reports of extremely foul odors preceding bigfoot sightings with smells like sulphur and rotten eggs that were supposed to accompany the presence of Medieval-style demons and Mephistophelean visitations. Austin even has it’s own paranormal oriented cryptozoologist, Rob Riggs, the author of In The Big Thicket: On The Trail Of The Wildman. An interview with Mr. Riggs will be included in a forthcoming issue of Austin Para Times.Texas Parapsychology ConnectionBridging the gap between Cryptozoological Investigations and Paranormal Research are the multitude of ghost, haunting, ESP and remote viewing seekers populating all of Texas. There’s the Lone Star Spirits and Capital City Ghost Research Society in Austin, North Texas Paranormal Investigation and Research Studies group in and around Dallas, and the South Texas Paranormal Society in Corpus Christi. Also of note is Michael Weaver and his San Antonio Paranormal Research Society. The SAPRS is a membership based division of the Institute of Paranormal Investigations, which conducts research in the areas of Apparitions, ESP, Hauntings, Remote Viewing, Mediumship and other paranormal phenomena using the rigid tenets of scientific method.Last but not least, we have legendary psi scientist Hal Puthoff, who has been in Austin for a while now studying possible alternative power sources involving Zero Point Energy. Puthoff produced the psi research scene’s premier Remote Viewing project at Stanford Research Institute in California working with the Father of Remote Viewing, Ingo Swann. Both Putoff and Ingo Swann spoke at last month’s International Remote Viewing Conference held here in Austin by former military remote viewer Paul Smith. Smith actively trains people in the art of Remote Viewing and makes his home in Round Rock.Of Crashed Craft & Soaring Airships: Texas UFOs - The Early YearsPerhaps the richest alternate paradigm engrained in Texas history is the state’s legendary UFO sightings & hotspots. An alleged crash of an alien ship has left a legacy of tales in Aurora, Texas. Some people believe, the interred body of the ship’s dead crewmember rests in the town’s cemetary. Someone even made a children’s movie based on the accounts, but didn’t attempt to portray an accurate record of the alleged events. Owners of the legendary Austin underground zine and counterculture store, FringeWare, commissioned a sculpture by artist Steve Brudniak to replace the stolen Aurora Alien tombstone.Let’s not forget other paranormal phenomenon like the Marfa Lights in West Texas that have mystified indigenous peoples as well as early and modern day settlers and travelers for a hundred years or more. The Marfa Mystery Lights appear almost everyday starting around dusk, and have been widely studied, but never solved. North East of Marfa is the site of another famous Texas UFO Mystery, the Lubbock Lights. The unidentified lights were seen by multiple witnesses and even photographed, but many dismissed them as geese flying in formation, reflecting the city lights off the bottoms of their bodies. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Southwestern States from California to Texas experienced a wave of unidentified flying objects before terms like UFO or flying saucer were ever introduced. These unidentified objects are known as airships because they predate the Wright Brothers’ contraption and seem to mimic early experimental blimps. Yet, in a strange twist some of the crew / occupant appearances portend both the Italian-looking olive-complexioned Space Brother crews of the 1950s and, in some cases, the short grey aliens of the 1980s seem predated by the Asian-eyed airship occupants.Several sightings of the airship were reported in Austin within the pages of our city’s precursor to today’s Austin American Statesman. The first sightings took place on April 19th and were reported in the next day’s Austin Daily Statesman. Two more mysterious airship sighting reports appeared in the April 26th & 29th issues.“About 3 o’clock yesterday morning, it began to rain and the young men were compelled to get up and fasten their tent. It was at this time they saw the mysterious air craft. They claim it was in sight fully fifteen minutes and are positive they could not have been mistaken. At intervals of every few seconds it would throw its searchlights, and the boys said the light looked as big as four ordinary arc lights. It made its appearance from behind Mount Bonnell and traveled north.” - Austin Daily Statesman, April 26, 1897“The airship, carrying a large headlight, passed over the city yesterday morning, apparently about 300 or 400 feet above the earth. … an intelligent and wholly reliable gentlemen living at the corner of Colorado and Second Streets. … Saw a great light slowly moving over the Salge Hotel. It was coming from the southeast and moved in a northwesterly direction… It traveled very slow, the light being so blinding that I could not see the shape of the vehicle. … After it had passed me, I could see the shape of the rear end of the vessel, and it appeared to be in this shape,’ and Mr. Porsch arranged his hands in a V shape, somewhat like the tail of a fish.” - Austin Daily Statesman, April 29, 1897Nearly a hundred years later, one of the most famous physical trace UFO cases would occur in North Texas. The Cash-Landrum Encounter is a well known case in ufology that left rather significant physical traces in the form of conspicuous radiation burns on the witnesses, the road, and the witnesses’ car. It was December 29th, 1980, when Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Colby Landrum were driving along Highway FM1485. Colby was the first to spot the distant object which would eventually approach them and block their way on the road. Vickie screamed to, “Stop the car or we shall be burned alive!” The diamond shaped object hovered at tree top level above the road, occasionally belching flames below. It also had small blue lights on its dull aluminum surface and occasionally emitted a beeping sound. The three of them got out of the car, but the heat terrified them. Then the helicopters arrived. “They seemed to rush in from all directions… it seemed like they were trying to encircle the thing,” Betty says. An adequate explanation for this sighting has never surfaced; most people assume it was a military test aircraft gone awry.Several Air Force Project Blue Book files document sightings throughout the State, including one in Austin at Mansfield Dam on June 24th, 1967 (the twentieth anniversary of the Kenneth Arnold sighting and the birth of the “Modern UFO Era”). The witness was none other than psychic-sensitive ufo-researcher contactee-artist Ray Stanford.Ray Stanford pioneered one of the world’s most interesting and instrumented approaches to civilian UFO research ever with his historic Project Starlight International. Armed with radar, cameras, magnetometers, lasers, computers and other equipment, Ray and company documented several interesting sightings just outside of Austin. In one incident an orange ball of light appeared while they had a very special terrestrial visitor on the property; Charles Hickson of the Hickson/Parker Pascagoula Mississippi Abduction. Ray Stanford has since disbanded this research lab and now uses his psychic intuition to find a wealth of rare dinosaur fossils up in the North East United States. So next time you’re ready to dismiss Texas as just another boring state, take a trip to Marfa to see the Mystery Lights dance or visit the Capitol Building in downtown Austin and peruse the Freemasonic symbolism. Look at the anomalous right above you in the Austin sky, or consider that anyone you pass by on the street could be one of the numerous contactees, researchers, and paranormalists that make this place a lot more interesting than most people would suspect.reSOURCES:-Southern Crypto Conference<www.CryptoKeeper.com>-Texas Bigfoot Research Center & the 2nd AnnualTexas Bigfoot Conference<www.TexasBigfoot.com>-Rob Rigg’s Mysterious Dimension<www.MysteriousDimension.com>-Austin’s Boggy Creek Monster<www.elfis.net/elfol8/e8bbeheab6.htm>-Lone Star Spirits<www.LoneStarSpirits.org>-North Texas Paranormal Investigation and Research StudiesDallas and Surrounding Areas<www.geocities.com/boxer75161/NTPRS.html>-South Texas Paranormal Society Corpus Christi<www.SouthTexasParanormalSociety.com>-Paranormal Research Society of TexasSan Antonio<www.ParanormalTexas.net>-Capital City Ghost Research SocietyAustin-Institute of Paranormal InvestigationsSan Antonio<hometown.aol.com/psiexplorer/index.html>-Remote Viewing Instructional Services<www.RViewer.com>-Austin’s Airship Sightings<www.elfis.net/elfol5/e5aa.html>-The Great Texas Airship Mystery by Wallace O. Over the last several years, the annual fundraising event has continued to grow in size from 150 attendees in 2001 to over 500 attendees in recent years. In 2006, the event was combined with the Bigfoot in Texas? exhibit in San Antonio at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures. This year’s event will be in Tyler, Texas at the Caldwell Auditorium and is scheduled for 26 September 2009. The all-day conference event features an impressive list of speakers who present the latest in bigfoot sightings and research. The list of speakers will be announced at a later date. The TBRC is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit scientific charitable organization, comprised of volunteer investigators, scientists and naturalists, pursuing education and research activities pertaining to the centuries-old “wildman” phenomenon in North America. The TBRC proposes that the source of the phenomenon is a biological entity, probably an unlisted large primate. The organization is actively engaged in activities designed to test that hypothesis, including the onsite investigation of credible reported sightings in the Ark-La-Tex-Oma region.Find out more at… 2009 Texas Bigfoot Conferencewww.TexasBigfoot.com / www.TexasBigfoot.orgFor more Texas Events check out our new EVENTS page.
High Texan Tales
